SINCE SONIA HAD returned from Lancaster, her periods had become irregular. She wasn’t sure what was going on—maybe her time on the streets or poor nutrition had messed with her system. She went to get a Pap smear and it came back abnormal. She spoke with a doctor who warned her it could be cervical cancer. He told her to get a biopsy and instructed her to make an appointment to have this done. Lady Q never made the appointment.
AS LADY Q became acquainted with the upper echelon of the Latin King hierarchy, the welcome her mother had given her on account of Lisette suddenly disappeared. A few months after Lady Q started visiting Tino, Marta told her that she would have to find another place to stay—she was returning to Puerto Rico. Lady Q didn’t believe her mother was actually going to leave and thought it was just a ploy to get her out of the house, so she countered by getting a job to help out financially. She already gave Marta money here and there from the cocaine trade she was slowly getting involved in, but she thought that getting a job would make her mother chill out with the Puerto Rico claims.
On the corner of Troy and North Avenue, one block away from where Lady Q lived, was a bar named Rhythm of the Night that was a primary hangout for the Latin Kings. In that bar, more cocaine was sold than alcohol. Lady Q inquired about getting a job there, and because of her status with the Latin Kings she was quickly hired as a waitress. Lady Q loved this job because she could socialize and party all night long.
In the meantime, Tammy was sharing parts of her life that made Lady Q uncomfortable and left her confused about what gang life was really about. A prime example was Tammy’s connection to the Latin Jivers, a rival gang of the Latin Kings. Tammy took Lady Q into the Jivers’ ’hood at Evergreen and Talman, to an apartment where all the gang members hung out. When she entered, the Jivers immediately knew who Lady Q was because of Tammy, but they were powerless to do anything but share their drugs and alcohol with her. There was one particular Jiver who Tammy was inseparable from who often came to the GED center. In turn, the Latin Kings were powerless to do anything about his appearance there because of Tammy. The Jiver was said to be a relative of Tammy’s and therefore could not be touched, but Lady Q soon saw that he was actually Tammy’s lover.
Lady Q was no stool pigeon. She would never backstab someone she hung out with regardless of how asinine she thought her actions were. During her visits with Tino, he sometimes asked about Tammy and what she was doing. Lady Q responded that he would have to ask his wife about her business since it was none of hers. This stance—her loyalty to a friend—impressed Tino and prompted him to trust Lady Q even more.
